Special Response Team

The primary mission of the University of Georgia Police Department Special Response Team (SRT) is to protect life and minimize the risk of violence. To accomplish this mission, the team trains extensively in advanced firearms and tactics, and conducts quarterly physical fitness tests. To earn a position on the team, officers must demonstrate a high level of proficiency with firearms. Each member of the team attends advanced firearms training courses specific to each of the specialized weapons utilized on missions, as well as team-oriented tactical courses.

The SRT is comprised of an entry team and a marksman element. Training focuses on particularly high-risk scenarios which require a more specialized response than can be provided by patrol resources. Incidents to which SRT might respond include hostage situations, barricaded suspects, and personal vehicle and bus rescues. Given the dangerous, volatile, and rapidly-changing nature of the incidents to which SRT must respond, team members must possess a high level of confidence and be prepared to make critical, split-second decisions.
