Special Release: Athens Clarke County Police Request Assistance in Solving MURDER/ARMED ROBBERY

MURDER/ARMED ROBBERY

Wednesday, December 05 at approximately 3:25 AM, Athens-Clarke County Police Officers responded to an Armed Robbery at Lays Shell Station on the corner of Lexington Road and Gaines School Road. Upon arrival, Officers discovered a Murder/ Armed Robbery had occurred. ACCPD Detectives and the GBI Special Agents are currently conducting a thorough investigation. At this time Forensic Units from both Agencies are on the scene. The victim has been transported to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities are releasing a portion of the store’s surveillance video. Both Agencies are requesting the Public’s assistance in identifying the suspect or any additional information concerning this crime. A GBI forensic sketch artist has begun work on a sketch of the suspect. That sketch will be released upon completion.
The suspect is as a Black Male, approximately 5’9”-5’10”, wearing what appeared to be a dark hooded sweatshirt, a dark colored mask covering the lower portion of his face, pants and dark shoes.

Missing Student Found

The University of Georgia Police Department announces that a body was found on the afternoon of Sunday, March 25, 2007 by persons hiking in the wooded area off of South Milledge Avenue between the Botanical Garden and the Women’s Sports Complex. The body has been determined to be that of the missing student, Yongsheng Li. At this time there are no facts that would lead the Police Department to feel that foul play was involved. The body has been taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for an autopsy which has been scheduled for Tuesday, March 27, 2007. The results of this autopsy will determine the next course of action in this investigation.

The Athens office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Forensic Science Unit assisted the University Police in processing the scene. The University Police Investigators will continue in their efforts to determine what occurred.

We ask that the couple who discovered the body, and who had left the area before the police arrived, to please contact the University Police at 706-542-2200. We also ask that any person who had contact with Mr. Li, or with any person matching the description of Mr. Li (Asian male, black hair, approximately 5’7” in height, weighing approximately 145 pounds, last seen wearing black rimmed glasses, a white T-shirt, green jeans, and gray sneakers) over the past fourteen (14) days to please contact the University Police Department at 706-542-2200.

The University Police would also like to thank the members of the community that assisted by putting out information and flyers to aid in locating Mr. Li.

Missing Person

Yongsheng Li missingThe University of Georgia Police Department seeks the assistance of the university community in locating Yongsheng Li, age 30, a UGA graduate student from China. Mr. Li left his home in family graduate housing on Saturday, March 10 and has not been seen or heard from since. He is 5′7″ tall, 145 pounds, wears glasses, and was last seen wearing a white t-shirt, green jeans and gray sneakers. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Mr. Li should contact UGA Police at 706-542-2200.

Vehicle Checkpoints

The University of Georgia Police Department will conduct Vehicle Checkpoints on the following dates: Friday, March 30, 2007; Friday, April 20, 2007; and Friday, May 4, 2007. The purpose of these checkpoints is to enhance the safety of the motoring public.
