Operation Identification

Operation Identification

Although the University of Georgia is a safe place to learn, live and work, no one is immune to theft. The University of Georgia Police Department would like to encourage all students and employees to participate in the Operation Identification program. This simple program is designed to help individuals take proactive steps to protect their property from theft. The program consists of two parts:

1) Marking valuable items
2) Keeping and up-to-date record of your valuables

Marking your Property

Mark your property with easily identifiable information such as your name, phone number or driver’s license number in conspicuous place. This will aid in deterring criminals from stealing your property and will help law enforcement officers return the items to you if they are recovered.

One great way to permanently mark your valuables is with an electric engraver. The University of Georgia Police Department Crime Prevention Unit has engravers available for use by the University community.

Maintaining a Record

Keeping a complete inventory of your valuable items and their identifying information (i.e. engravings, serial numbers and model numbers) allows you to accurately report any missing items to the police department. This provides the police with the ability to identify and return recovered items to their owners and to search for missing items through a national database. Remember to keep this list current and stored in a place that can be easily accessed if you ever have to file a police report.
