Personal Safety Technology
There are a number of programs for your electronic devices that can enhance your personal safety. While we cannot recommend any we list a few here as examples in no particular order.
Personal Safety Apps
There is now a free personal safety app for your smartphone available to students, faculty, and staff. The app is called "Guardian" offered by Rave Mobile Safety. The application can be downloaded for free from the app store feature on your smartphone.
Please keep in mind that there are other personal safety applications available to you besides this one. You can find some of them listed above. The Guardian app is free to you when you enter your @uga.edu email address. The University of Georgia version will automatically load on your phone when you enter your '@uga.edu' address. The Guardian app features a safety timer, assignable "guardians"-- friends who can be notified when you are in route from one location to another, and an emergency call button that will dial 911 and track your location (if enabled) when activated.
Please keep in mind that the Guardian app does not belong to nor is it operated by the University of Georgia Police Department. Whether you choose the Guardian app, another personal safety app, or no app, we encourage you to be familiar with the fastest way to use your phone to dial 911 in an emergency. Most phones have the ability to make emergency calls from the lock screen with one button. Be sure you know how to quickly access 911 on your phone in the event of an emergency.
As always, we encourage folks to be aware of their surroundings, and when you see anything suspicious, please call us. We are available 24/7/365 to help you if you see anything suspicious or are in need of assistance.
